I feel you and have felt the same recently. Vampire Survivors and a nice podcast or series is a great one!
I did used to do this with my mega drive games or gameboy games. I would listen to music of my favourite bands while playing the games. I have a distinct memory of playing ecco the dolphin while blasting the first 'N Sync album. Oh dear. haha!
Very interesting perspective, Alex. I usually game because I want to be immersed in whatever I'm playing, so sound is key to that immersion. And NMS does have sound, although not much of a SDTK. The planets themselves are alive with all manner of sounds, from the wind rushing-or-not at various speeds, to the various creatures.
I'm playing Two Point Museum right now -- it feels like it was made for this. The backing track to your museum management is literally an in-game radio station / podcast.
That said, it's written quite well and has some great quips from the announcers. So it would be a shame to miss that!
I do really enjoy some good music and sound design in games, but if there isn't any dialogue or text to be taking up word-space in my brain, I'll be listening to a podcast almost every time.
Must say, I have podcasts going for 90% of my gaming, irrespective of what the game is. Sorry voice artists, musicians and sound designers!
The review quotes for a game advertising its ‘boring’ aspects would be brilliant.
"So mindless, I love it."
"It's easy to put down."
"I don't even remember playing it. 5 stars"

Im well aware im committing some sort of crime against sound engineers by not listening to their hard work 😂

That’s what subtitles are for!

Yeah, I figured that audio is what can be turned off in a game easily :D
