Reconnect Recap - w/e 13th July
A weekly newsletter highlighting some of the best articles to feature on Reconnect in the past week.
Kia Ora folks
Welcome to another week of the Reconnect Recap, the companion newsletter to the games writing aggregation platform, Reconnect.
It’s a bit cold and dreary here in NZ, definitely got some seasonal depression kicking in, then I open the news and global depression kicks in. That doesn’t mean the gaming content is slowing down however, it’s been a busy week here on Reconnect and this newsletter is jam packed with awesome things for you to read.
Today we’re talking about PEAK, the Stop Killing Games Movement, the stop deleting Fallout source code movement, the stop making anime horse girls collective, and some real cozy vibes.
Let’s dig in.
Great Write Ups
On The Beach: Bullet Points discusses some key elements of the latest death stranding game and a surprising reference to a novel from the 50’s.
Developers vs Regulators vs Gamers: This masterpiece by
outlines the upcoming troubles as all three of these groups try and fight each other over what is fair in terms of making games and running services. In favour of game pass: I stand with
on this one, as shitty as MS is and the dire state the industry is in, there are still some benefits of Game Pass for both player and developer.Feeling Cozy?: Like Stardew, feel the itch to play something similar, HerCozyGaming has 20 other cozy games to try, sad to see Fields of Mystria didn’t make the cut.
Dropping the bomb on Fallout: Fallout creator Tim Cain talks openly about their anger with games preservation and how they were directed to destroy old code they had backed up, despite their being no preservation efforts.
No Longer a Live Service: In light of the Stop Killing Games movement,
explains whats happening and the impact its having.Gacha Horse: I’ve been seeing references to horses all week, now the
has explained why everyone is training anime horse girls.Mean Machines is back: TimeExtension has an interview with Paul Davies behind the new Super Cellphone Gamer promotional magazine and they talk about how the popular 90’s Mean Machines came about.
How they got 6k wish lists with one email: Getting your new game seen by the internet is a very hard task, though not harder than getting your writing seen by the internet I will add 🤣.
explains how one email resulted in getting the attention of YouTubers and gamers alike.PEAK fun: There has been no end to the new around PEAK’s success this week. A game jam game that turned into 5million sales is definitely on my radar. Rewinder write up a lovely piece about this week.
Having a chat around the camp fire: SuperJump Magazine talks us through Fireside Feelings a cute game where you and real other people talk about your feelings around a cozy camp fire.
Annoyed by the amount of bullshit I had to balance: I see that
and I had the same experience with the Alters. Read about how they enjoyed the game, but the way the game pushes back on you can be tiring.
Fun Tidbits
Nintendo and Apple once synced up to make a series of game boy colours that matched the iMac line up.

Writer Recap
This week i’m shouting out
, not just because they gave me some great writing advice, also not because they live in the same country as me, but because I really enjoy their writing, and I think you might do so too. From their recent, and very humorous, I flew 2400 kms to not talk to Hideo Kojima, to their review of a very ugly PS1 Joystick, I find their writing to be very easy to read and always filled with some good insight.
