Reconnect Recap - w/e 12th October
A weekly recap of some of the best video game articles to feature on Reconnect.
Kia Ora folks
Welcome to another week of the Reconnect Recap, the companion newsletter to Reconnect, the games writing discovery platform.
This week were covering a lot of game dev tips and tricks which i’m appreciating a lot due to messing around on a project in Godot, we’ve also got stories on Sony, ZA/UM, Rare, and tonnes of fun tidbits bits for you to bite into.
Let’s dig in!
Great Write Ups
Performance Issues: A game is a myriad of things, writing, art, mechanics, pacing, difficulty level, and the list goes on. So when it comes to reviewing the game, Button Musher asks should we be considering the technical performance of a game in a review.
Do the paper work: As someone who dabbles in game dev, it can be hard to figure out really where to start, do you plan, start generating art assets, grey box in an engine? José Pérez has the answer.
Poetic Translation: Azhdarchid explains all about how they approached localising the English version of Pathologic 2, specially how to translate Tragedians.
Presidential Crisis: No, not that President. JM Mendez gives us a walk down presidential memory in response to Xbox’s current crisis.
Excelling at UI: User interfaces are an art form unto their own, and when your so focussed on getting the design and balance of a game right it can feel daunting to have to think about an entire visual system to deal with. Get Info has a great strategy for designing user interfaces.
Electric Violence: Violence is at the core of the majority of video games, it’s a staple. The Spieler dives right into what does, and doesn’t work in their article covering the Three Pillars of Excellent Combat.
Conquering Europe: In an interview with Chris Deering, The Game Business uncovers how Sony usurped Nintendo and Sega from Europe to become the number one console.
On the grind: Maurice Klimek asks, is the grind good or a bad economy, their recent endevours with Silksong has given them some interesting clarity.
Need more Disco: We all know that the situation at ZA/UM games is very precarious and none of us are expecting another game any time soon, but SuperJump Magazine dives into those who are spinning of Disco Elysium follow on content like TTRPGS and card games.
A replay of Rare: Peter Monks is recapping publisher Rare through time, going through in painstaking detail their long and very impressive history.
